Metallic Moon was born on November 20, 2011, at ‘Farnham,’ Taroom, QLD, bred and owned by Kylie Graham. She was a striking bay roan filly, the product of an outstanding pedigree—sired by the rising cutting star Metallic Cat and out of the well-performed mare Just One Moore. From the beginning, Moon stood out with her intelligence, athleticism, and strong work ethic.
Raised with care by Kylie, she was broken in at home by Kylie and Mat Durkin. Recognizing her potential, Kylie sent her to renowned cutting trainer Phil Dawson as a two-year-old. Under Phil’s guidance, Moon thrived, impressing with her cow sense, composure, and agility. Phil described her as “smart, composed, athletic, cowy—one of the best I’ve ever trained”, a sentiment reinforced by his decision to breed to her first foal, Conmoon.
Moon’s cutting career was marked by consistent success. At the 2014 NCHA Futurity, she entered the Final with the highest aggregate score and finished strongly. She finaled in every major Futurity event, proving her talent time and again. Her Derby year followed the same pattern—placing, winning, and continually impressing onlookers with her ability and consistency.
After her cutting career, Moon transitioned into campdrafting, a move that proved to be a perfect fit. She adapted quickly, and in just her second start, she placed in the Novice at the 2018 ACA National Finals. From that point forward, she became a dominant force in the sport. Kylie and Moon have secured countless ribbons and cutout wins at the highest level, and Kylie’s daughter, Ally, has also built a winning partnership with the mare. Moon’s exceptional cattle sense is unmistakable—she reads cattle naturally, and many who have watched her draft recall how she works effortlessly off the reins, making every move with precision and ease.
Recognizing her rare combination of breeding, ability, and temperament, Kylie began an embryo transfer programwhen Moon was four years old. To date, Moon has produced seven foals, with two more due this season, ensuring that her legacy will live on in future generations of elite performance horses.
