For Emma and Andrew Cavanagh, the search for the right stallion had become a very specific one. They had been keeping a close eye on the market for an outcross sire prospect, a stallion they believed would complement the growing influence of Metallic Cat bloodlines throughout Australia. They knew exactly what they were looking for, but they certainly were not expecting to find him when they travelled to Tamworth for the 2026 Nutrien Classic Performance Horse Sale.
In fact, purchasing a horse was never part of the plan.
Before the sale, Emma had noticed Lil Bugatti advertised across social media and was immediately intrigued. Curiosity led her to look into the stallion further and while attending the sale, she decided to inspect him in person. It was there they connected with professional trainer Paxton Pulford, who was preparing to ride Bugatti through the sale ring on behalf of his close friend, Tyler Hodgman.
Tyler had trained Bugatti throughout his cutting career from a two-year-old and knew the young stallion extensively. Paxton also spoke highly of him and could not praise the horse enough. He believed Bugatti had all the ingredients to become an exceptional sire prospect and encouraged the Cavanagh family to strongly consider investing in him.
When the hammer finally dropped, Emma suddenly found herself the owner of a beautiful young stallion with an exciting future ahead.
Following the purchase, the decision was made to leave Bugatti in training with Paxton to continue campaigning through his cutting aged event career. While the Cavanagh family had originally come from a campdrafting background, the purchase of Bugatti also represented a new direction for them as they began transitioning into the cutting industry.
Their plans extend well beyond simply owning a stallion. Emma and Andrew are embracing becoming part of the cutting community, with ambitions of breeding, competing and developing a strong performance horse program around Bugatti. In the future, they hope to step aboard him themselves and enjoy competing in non-pro classic events.
For Emma, there were several qualities that made Bugatti stand out from the beginning. Temperament was a major factor, alongside his training foundation and the strength of his genetics. She believes those characteristics collectively make him not only an exciting performance prospect, but also a horse capable of contributing positively as a future sire.
With their transition from campdrafting to cutting, the family has recently downsized their existing performance horse team and now plans to rebuild strategically. Their vision is to invest in embryos from elite-performing mares and establish the next generation of their performance program around Bugatti.
The immediate plan is for Bugatti to continue his cutting career under Paxton while also beginning his future with Emma and Andrew in non-pro aged events. However, they also have ambitions outside of the cutting pen.
The family is eager to explore whether Bugatti can successfully transition into the challenge arena and prove himself as a truly versatile performance horse. They intend to send him to Dan Lithgow for campaign opportunities within the challenge discipline before returning him to his cutting career. Emma believes competing in the challenge arena will increase his visibility across the Australian performance horse industry and demonstrate his ability as a universal athlete.
Emma also feels that Paxton has been the ideal fit for Bugatti and values the relationship they have developed throughout the process. More than anything, she appreciates his communication and honesty as a trainer.
"Honesty is probably what we value most," Emma explained. "Paxton has been excellent throughout the process and very open about Bugatti and his progression."
The family certainly has no shortage of goals for the young stallion. While their biggest focus remains seeing him enjoy success in the cutting arena, Andrew has some ambitious dreams of his own, particularly the possibility of seeing Bugatti compete successfully at Cloncurry in the Stockman's Challenge as a derby horse in 2027.
Long term, they would also love to see him venture into campdrafting once his cutting career concludes, believing his future may span multiple disciplines across the Australian performance horse industry.
Although Bugatti has not yet bred any mares to date, the family is extremely excited about what lies ahead for him as both a competitor and future sire. He will stand at Monto Veterinary Group in Monto, Queensland, where frozen and chilled semen will be available, while allowing him to remain close to home.
With an exciting future unfolding and no shortage of ambition behind him, Lil Bugatti appears destined for a journey that reaches far beyond a single arena. From cutting to challenge events and potentially campdrafting in years to come, the young stallion has every opportunity to showcase his versatility on some of Australia’s biggest stages. While the dreams surrounding him are certainly significant, for Emma and Andrew the greatest reward will be stepping into the arena themselves, enjoying the journey alongside him and watching the next chapter of Bugatti’s story begin.
