The Topside
BACKGROUND STORY
Cole Black was bred by Max Glasser of Glencoe Stud, a respected name in Australian performance horse breeding. In 2010, Brett and Wendy Kerr, graziers from the Calliope region, attended a reduction sale of Max’s, originally with their sights set on a couple of fillies. However, as they sat in the grandstand, a young colt entered the sale ring—Cole Black. Something about him caught their eye, and by the end of the day, they found themselves heading home with an unexpected but exciting new prospect.
Cole Black was broken in and used for mustering by the Kerrs, gaining some practical experience before being introduced to campdrafting. When they felt he was ready, Brett and Wendy gave him his first start.
In 2015, they asked Joe Payne to ride Cole Black for the first time at the Proston Campdraft. Over the next two years, Brett and Wendy continued to take him to drafts, with Joe riding him from time to time. Then, in 2017, Joe took on the stud full-time for an entire season. The partnership proved to be a natural fit, and from that year onwards, Joe has continued to campaign Cole Black, forming a strong and successful partnership that continues to prove a successful combination.
