Cash’s Legacy was never just another horse bred to join the team, she was bred with purpose. Behind her story sits generations of carefully developed bloodlines, thoughtful breeding decisions, and a determination from Corey and Trudy Holden to preserve a maternal line that has become incredibly important to their program.
Legacy is sired by RS Chisum and out of Cash’s Spin, a mare whose influence on the CBARH breeding program had already proven invaluable. Cash’s Spin herself was by Docs Spinifex and out of Corey’s original foundation mare Blue Dove, a mare whose progeny have accumulated more than $200,000 in earnings and helped establish the foundation of the program. Cash’s Spin became an exceptional producer in her own right, leaving behind successful performers and producers including Chisums Blue Spin, who Corey and Trudy sold to Greg and Tracey Clavarino and who later went on to produce outstanding money earning progeny. She was also the dam of the successful Open Campdraft mare Chisums Cash, campaigned by Ben Hall.
For Corey, selling Chisums Blue Spin left a gap he had always hoped to fill. He regarded her as one of the most exceptional mares he had worked with, an outstanding athlete, beautiful type of mare and exceptional producer. Determined to recreate that same genetic package and continue the family line, Corey and Trudy made the decision to breed Cash’s Spin back to RS Chisum.
That mating produced something special. Cash’s Spin double ovulated, resulting in two embryos, one becoming Cash’s Legacy and the other Blue Cash. Corey trained Blue Cash for Trudy to campaign in Non Pro competition while he retained Cash’s Legacy for his own show career.
The twins would eventually take different paths. Blue Cash was sold throughout her show career and went on to enjoy a successful Non Pro career with her new owners before sadly passing away following a paddock accident. With Blue Cash gone and the later loss of Cash’s Spin, the significance of Legacy within the breeding program suddenly became even greater.
The name Cash’s Legacy carried more meaning than originally intended.
“She’s called Cash’s Legacy because she was the last filly foal out of Cash’s Spin to continue her legacy,” Trudy explained. “So now the legacy can live on.”
As a performer, Legacy proved herself both in the show pen and across multiple levels of competition. Throughout her career she accumulated lifetime earnings of $9,375.73 and built a consistent performance record across Futurities, Derbies, Classics and weekend events. Corey initially campaigned her through her aged event career, where she competed in Open Futurity and Open Derby competition, earning strong results including a 3rd placing in the NSW Cutting Horse Club White Park Scone Open Derby, a win in the LTHCC Victorian Super Stakes $5,000 Novice and a 2nd placing in Open competition at Tristar Cutting.
As Legacy progressed through her career, Trudy took over the reins and enjoyed success campaigning her through Non Pro competition. Their partnership resulted in a 4th placing in the NCHA Non Pro Derby, a 5th placing in the Darling Downs Non Pro Derby and several placings in Non Pro Classic Challenge competition. Legacy also became a versatile mare for the family, with Bailee McClurg later stepping into the saddle and campaigning her successfully in Youth competition, including a 4th placing at the Darling Downs Futurity Youth Senior event. Throughout her career, Legacy demonstrated not only talent and consistency, but also the ability to adapt and perform for multiple riders.
Trudy recalls that while she loved the mare, Legacy certainly taught her a few lessons.
“She’s one of the quickest mares I’ve ever ridden,” Trudy said. “She was really feely, electric and incredibly cowy. She was so intense on cattle that when you were working or showing her, your job was often trying to slow her down.”
Legacy’s natural speed and intensity separated her from her siblings. Trudy describes her as a stretchier mare with good rein length and plenty of strength, adding that her athleticism often felt almost lightning fast.
“She wanted a cow so badly,” she said. “You always knew she was giving you absolutely everything.”
As much as Legacy has been valued as a show horse, her greatest contribution may still lie ahead. When Cash’s Spin passed away, Corey knew he needed a mare with the quality and calibre to fill her place in the broodmare paddock. Legacy was always destined for that role.
Each year Corey and Trudy spend significant time researching and planning matings, paying close attention to stallions showcased at the NCHA Futurity. For the 2026 breeding season, Trudy suggested breeding Legacy to Spots Hottist, a young sire being promoted through SDP Buffalo Ranch in America.
Initially Corey knew little about the stallion himself, but after looking deeper into his pedigree they discovered something that immediately captured his attention. Spots Hottist is out of a Dual Rey mare that Corey had personally trained during his time in America.
Corey held that mare in extremely high regard.
“I knew how exceptional that mare was,” Corey explained. “The stallion himself was a beautiful type, but knowing the quality of the mare he was out of made the decision much easier.”
Legacy is now carrying her first foal by Spots Hottist in 2026, creating even greater excitement around the future of the mare line. Corey and Trudy intend to heavily support and promote her foals from an early stage, with plans to retain and develop her first foal themselves. Corey believes doing so will give him the best understanding of what Legacy reproduces and the traits she passes on.
Having worked with this family of mares for generations, Corey feels there are strong reasons to be optimistic. He knows the bloodline, he knows the traits, and he knows the consistency these mares have shown over time.
Cash’s Legacy was retained to replace her mother, preserve a family line and continue building on years of careful breeding decisions. If she can carry on the reputation established by mares like Blue Dove and Cash’s Spin, Corey and Trudy believe the future could be very exciting.
With Legacy now preparing to produce Corey’s fourth generation of breeding, anticipation around her future as a broodmare continues to build.
For Corey and Trudy, she wasn't simply the last daughter of Cash’s Spin, she was the mare entrusted with carrying the family forward.
